7. Take a graduate entrance exam.
8. Anything where it's important to present the smartest and most put together version of yourself.
I like to ask Seth's different questions about what "science has proven" cuz you know, he knows stuff. I've thought that phrase was funny for a while now because one time one of my kid clients told me that "science has proven" that if you sleep on your stomach you have nightmares so he always sleeps on his back. The same kid knew a lot of UFO/Alien "facts". I always think of him when I ask Seth something about what "science has proven". Last night I asked him if science had proven that women are dumber when pregnant. He said. "Yeah. Pregnancy fog." Then I said, "It probably wasn't that smart to take the GRE or apply to graduate school right now then huh?" Prolly not.

The Herways, Pumpkins, and Baby Boy #2
My sister Taylor requested a blog update. For you, Fwizobiz.
The Dan and Lara Herways came to town last weekend. They stayed in Coeur d'Alene, just a skip, hop, and a jump from Spokane. I only took one picture, but not really by choice, our camera is acting up. We had lots of fun seeing their family, went on a nature walk, bike rides (not me), swam at their hotel, and had a few meals together. Taft and Brauer get along super well and it was so fun to have them play together. Taft really likes kids older than him and I think Brauer was excited to be older than somebody! Their kids had fall break and we were so happy that they chose to spend their break with us!
Earlier last week we headed to an area of Spokane called Greenbluffs. It's a community of like 20 or something farms that sell their produce, crafts, etc. to the public. We went during the week and it was a little disappointing so we're probably going to go this weekend when they have more going on.
I've been feeling a little guilty that I should be doing more to prep for the new baby. With Taft we had so much to buy, showers to attend, a nursery to decorate, but this time around, especially since we're having another boy there's just not as much planning to do and I feel guilty about it for some reason. I've also been feeling bad that he's going to wear so many hand-me-downs. Seth tells me he liked that part of being a second child. He said when school shopping came around he got his share of new clothes but then got all of his older brother's old clothes too, so it was double awesome. Anyway, the new baby does have a new special stuffed animal, I'm making him a blanket this week, and I've been on the prowl for a perfect "coming home" outfit. If this sounds like I'm requesting baby gifts and showers, I AM NOT AT ALL. All I'm saying is since we have pretty much everything and are not shopping for things left and right then it means we're not as excited for this baby, but WE ARE BABY! We can't wait for you to get here!
Also, regarding baby boy, I've had more ultrasounds this time around to monitor his growth and some other stuff that I won't bore you with. He's looking fantastic and at the last ultrasound he weighed 2 lbs. 11 oz. Just a little peanut. We got some great shots of his face and it looks like we're going to have another studmuffin on our hands. I think we have a name for him too. We got a baby doll for Taft today to help him to learn to be soft. So far he's been very gentle with the baby, gives him kisses, and hasn't thrown him yet. It came with girl clothes on, but for keeping our manliness in check I'll be making some boy baby clothes for him.
And finally, my mom found this video of Taylor from a few years ago. She posted it on facebook, but I think more of the world needs to see it:

Seattle (again) and Portland
Lanx's first game was in Seattle against Seattle University. The weather was perfect for the game, whichI was really surprised about due to the location. The next day my mom, Taft, and I hung around downtown Seattle in the morning until we drove to Portland. That night we met up with my cousin Adam and his two SUPER cute boys Davis and Wilson for dinner. It was quite entertaining and not relaxing whatsoever to be at a sit-down restaurant with a 2 1/2 year old, a 1 1/2 year old, and another baby less than 1. My cousin Adam is super funny though and even though it was a crazy night it was a lot of fun. I didn't end up staying for Lanx's Portland game because Taft desperately needed a nap so I figured I should hit the road home. It was a good thing too because Lanx's game was delayed by an hour and then went into double overtime. Taft ended up sleeping the first three hours of the six hour drive home. It was perfect!
I only took one picture but here is Taft and my mom at Lanx's Seattle game. Taft is sporting his green and showing off his Wolverine pride.

Booger Wreath
I saw a tutorial for a cute holiday wreath made out of lima beans. I thought split peas would be cute so I bought a bunch. I thought it was a cute idea until I started glueing them on and now I think it looks like a wreath made out of boogers.
If you want a project that uses a ton of split peas, a ton of hot glue, and wastes a colossal amount of time, then this is the project for you!

18 Months (ish)
This video is rather long and a little slow. Probably only the most loyal fans in the Bumski Fan Club will be able to watch the whole thing.
Taft is now almost 19 months old but we just had his 18 month check up this week. His stats read:
Weight: 26 lbs. 6 oz. - 50th%
Height: 33 1/2" - 75th%
Head: 19 3/4" - 95th%
So basically he's not chubby, he's kinda tall, and his head is huge. This past doctor's experience was not a fun one for Taft. The poor guy had to get two new immunizations, a flu shot, and then had his blood drawn. It was a very sad hour, but he perked right up once we left and was pleasant the rest of the day. I always get nervous after shots that he's going to get sick and have a high fever or something.
Taft is at a really really fun age right now and is talking more and more. His first somewhat sentence the other day was "brush teeth". Not really a sentence but he did put two words together. He's added a few new words to his vocabulary lately like:
bus- "boosh"
helicopter- (i don't even know how I would spell the way he says it, but you can tell it's something along the lines of helicopter)
cracker- "cacka"
cheese- "cheese"
water- "wawa"
boots- "boose"
He jabbers constantly and it's fun to actually understand some of the words he's saying. He likes to read books and he'll often go into his room by himself, climb up on the rocking chair, and tell himself the stories. It's so cute. He loves to play with cars and blocks, but mostly cars. And of course other non-approved items like pens and markers and dangerous sharp objects.
He knows where some of his body parts are like head, nose, toes, belly button, and bum. Bum is his absolute favorite body part to point out. He'll say bum over and over while slapping it. We've almost got eyes down also.
He finally knows that I am "Mom" and Seth is "Dad". He still doesn't say mom or dad to get our attention but if we ask who's that, and point to one another he can now distinguish the difference. Also when Seth leaves Taft will shrug his shoulders and put his hands up in the "where's so-and-so" action and say "Da?"
He's a pretty good eater, but definitely has a sweet tooth. The things I've been most surprised that he has liked to eat have been enchiladas and salsa.
He's been a really great sleeper since we moved to Spokane. This past week was rough for some reason, but I think things are getting back to normal. He takes a 2 hour nap in the afternoon, sometimes a little longer, and goes to bed around 7:30 and wakes up around 7. He's really easy to put down, we just do our routine, put him in bed and then he waves "goodnight" to us and that's it. It's awesome.
He had his first burn accident this morning. I had just finished ironing and had unplugged the iron and took it off the ironing board and put it on my dresser while it cooled. I thought I had put it out of his reach but apparently not and Taft ended up burning his fingers on it. It was so sad and I feel terrible! All day long he's been saying "hot" and "ouch" and showing us his hand.
The only downside to this age right now is the big T-word. TANTRUMS. Those are so not fun. It seems that at least once a day he has one in the hallway or elevator of our building so people probably hate us for sure. You can guarantee you have a flip-out coming your way if you have to stop Taft from doing something he wants to do/doesn't want to do. Like going the wrong way in the building or refusing to get on the elevator when you have 10,000 grocery bags in your hands, or when he wants to run in the parking lot, or if he has to stay in the shopping cart longer than he wants, or if you try to take him into a clothing store.
Other than a few breakdowns during the day, Taft is one fantastic little boy. I especially notice it more when we're around other kids who are like little devils. Taft really is a very easy kid and it doesn't hurt that he's so dang cute.

USMLE and GRE
Seth and I both had a big week last week. Seth took his final test (Step 3) for his Medical Licensing Exams (aka Boards). The next big test he'll take is before he finishes his residency and it will be to become a board certified anesthesiologist. For now, assuming he passed, he's licensed to practice medicine and write prescriptions.
I took the GRE and found out what I already know; I'm not that smart. On the flip side, I'm not that dumb either. Turns out I'm dumber than about half the people that take the GRE but also smarter than the dumber half of people that take it. Eh. It is what it is. So maybe I'm not the greatest applicant academically, hopefully my other strengths can win me a spot in San Diego State's Social Work Program.
a. Seth is really impressed with my ability to catch things. It is pretty impressive if I do say so myself. A couple BYU games ago he was wishing I was the receiver on the team instead of the actual receiver.
b. Seth says I make a really good tuna sandwich. True again.
c. I am really good at "Friends" trivia.
d. I've never driven the wrong way on a one-way street, unlike some people I'm married to.
Those are all things a social work program looks for right?

Seattle and Vancouver (finally)

Vancouver is the perfect urban-mountain-ocean blend. While we were there we walked lots around the city, hiked a bit on Grouse Mountain, and rode bikes along the sea wall. My only concern about living in Vancouver would be a serious Vitamin D deficiency and a bad case of SAD (seasonal affective disorder). I'm all for a good rain storm but 90 straight days of rain and no sunshine might put me into a deep depression.
Also, Vancouver has a European vibe that makes you love it, but at the same time has great American amenities like fountain soda and English is the primary language spoken.
Before Vancouver we went to Seattle and stayed with Seth's BFF Jared (Jerry) and his wife, Jen, and their cute boys, Chase and Calvin. Chase is a year older than Taft and Taft had the time of his life playing with him. They got along so well and it was really fun watching them play together. We were really just in Seattle for a full day, so Taft, Seth, and I walked around Pike's Place, got clam chowder at the pier, and walked around Seattle a bit. It brought back memories of going to Seattle for Jerry and Jen's wedding when Seth and I were dating. One thing we did back then was get clam chowder at Ivar's at the pier and it was my top thing I wanted to do this time around. I love soup and I thought it would be fun for Taft to throw french fries to the seagulls that sit on the balcony squawking at people until they feed them. I told my mom about it and she said, "They sell that at Costco." Of course they do. Why does Costco have to take the fun out of everything? Actually, I love Costco. Who doesn't? Seth and I talk about what we're going to do when we have real money and one of the highest priorities will be to buy yummy fruit like pineapple, mango, etc. from Costco.
Later that night we met up with Jerry's little family and went to a Mariners v. Red Sox game. I don't think any of us caught a ton of the game but we did make it all the way to the 7th inning stretch with three kids under 3. We had great seats but ended up moving on account of our kids being a little too rambunctious for others to enjoy the game. Ironically, we moved to where no one was sitting except for one crotchety old couple who at different times told both Jerry and myself that "We can't SEE THROUGH you" when we stood up to deal with children. What is it with grumpy strangers lately?

| Chase and Taft entertaining themselves |
On our way home from the trip we stopped off at Seth's friend's (Rock) parents' apple orchard/giant. farm. Rock's dad showed us all around the farm and explained how it all works. Turns out that it's harder than Johnny Appleseed made it seem. You don't just put an apple seed in the ground and get delicious apples eventually. It's actually quite involved. Then they let us pick TONS of apples and let us taste different apples that they were trying to make new breeds of. SO....yummy.
So, that was our week vacation. Our next vacation won't be until we go look for apartments in San Diego in the Spring. That's kind of depressing. Luckily, later in October Seth's brother's family is coming, then my family comes from Thanksgiving, then a month later we'll have a new baby! Even though Seth has to work like a dog with no vacation for a while we still have lots to look forward to.

The GRE and how I ruined my chances in 7th grade
I am getting ready to take the GRE soon in hopes of getting accepted into a social work grad program. I am now seriously doubting what the heck I am thinking and want to turn back but I already paid 160 bucks to take the test so I kinda feel I gotta. Breathe. Let me paint a little picture for ya.
First grade: It's around Christmas time and Mrs. Magill is having everyone color giant elves that we will eventually hang around the classroom. The catch is you can't color your elf until you've solved all the addition and subtraction problems correctly that are all over the elf. It takes me days, DAYS to work on the elf. I just can't seem to get the answers right. Part of the problem might be that I confuse the numbers 11 and 12. I don't know if 11 is called "eleven" or if 12 is called "eleven". (That sounds so weird, but I really struggled with it.) Bottom line: I am the LAST one to put my elf up.
Summer after first grade: My mom must have caught wind of my math deficiency and I do math worksheets all summer long.
Second grade: I'm placed in the "Green Group" for math. You guys, this is the ADVANCED math group. Yep, the girl who didn't know the difference between 11 and 12 now is "advanced" mathematically for her age. It's a miracle and my mom deserves all the credit.
From 2nd grade on, I was on a very promising math trajectory. There was talk of Harvard. (I'm just sayin.) Fast forward to 7th grade and the trajectory suddenly stops and I fall off the edge, crash, and burn. Apparently, in my fully developed 12 year old brain, I thought it would make me look like a loser if I actually did my math homework. This was only a problem in math class. You see, there were 8th and 9th graders in my math class and it was of the utmost importance for me to appear as cool as possible. My mental coolness checklist must have gone something like this:
1. Unionbay pants-adequate bagginess? Check.
2. Hang Ten shirt-or at least a really good look alike? Check.
3. Barrel curled bangs- barreled enough? Check.
4. Skipped math homework? Check.
8th grade didn't help things when I had to take geometry which still to this day is SO confusing to me. It didn't help that my geometry teacher had an extremely thick Japanese accent. My mom got me into another geometry class where I could understand the actual words spoken. That didn't help. Then my parents hired a tutor from the University of Utah who also had an accent. During our one tutoring session he said, "You undastand? Yes? Okey Tokey?" No okey tokey. That didn't help. Then they hired another who drew smiley and frowny faces instead of x's and y's. That didn't help. Then they hired my cousin, who was my SAME age. Embarrassment- accomplished, mastering of geometry-not accomplished.
Well, here I am a million years later trying to recall the things I was purposely trying to avoid during my 7th grade algebra class just to prove to a social work program (which involves ZERO math) that I am a smart, capable person deserving a masters degree. AND I AM STRESSING OUT.
I feel like furthering my education is just really something I want to do, and I really do feel like I deserve to try it. I think I'm worried that I'll do horribly on the test and then not get into the program and then my life will be ruined forever and ever. Okay, not really, but I worry that if I don't get in then I'll never do much more with my career in social work and my brain will slowly turn to mush.
I doubt you've made it this far into my rant but just pray for me okay? Thanks. 'Preciate cha.
p.s. Seth just came home and asked, "Are you studying for the GRE". I said, "Nope, I'm blogging about how I'm stressed about the GRE."

Save The Music
I LOVE this teacher and these kids. I've watched a bunch of their YouTube videos. This teacher totally rocks and I love how into the music the kids get. I may or may not cry when these kids sing.

Gram and Pop Come to Spokane
Seth's parents made quite the trek from Belgium to Spokane over Labor Day weekend. They were actually out visiting the states and helping Aunt Colie move to San Diego. We were honored that they made the long drive from Utah to Spokane just to see us for a short weekend. We did our best to show them all the inland northwest has to offer in the short 48 hours they were visiting.
I didn't take many pictures. Seth's mom has a great new camera so she took most of the pictures.
The first night we ate at a restaurant called Anthony's, that has a great view of Spokane Falls. Some people had taken us to dinner there when we came up looking for apartments and we thought it was something Gram and Pop would appreciate. We sat outside and enjoyed the summer air, with a light breeze, and a great view.
The weekend they were here happened to be the same weekend as the "Pig Out" event at Riverfront Park. There were a ton of food vendors and live bands playing all weekend long. After dinner we headed over the listen to some of the music. Taft got his groove on.
Saturday morning we had breakfast at the hospital so Gram and Pop could see where Seth works. Taft pretty much just ate sugary thing after sugary thing for breakfast so he was a bit wired.
We then drove to Coeur d'Alene and rode bikes along the Centennial Trail, had lunch at the lake, and then hurried back for the first BYU game of the season and a BBQ with friends. Gram and Pop must be good luck because BYU hasn't won since they've been back in Europe. After the game Seth, Taft, and I were pooped and went to bed early. Gram and Pop are party animals and went back to the "Pig Out" event to listen to more music.
Sunday we went to church together and then while I made dinner Taft, Seth, Gram, and Pop went to Manito Park.
We loved having our first guests in Spokane, we just wish it could have been longer! Taft loved having his grandparents come play and cried when they got on the elevator to leave.

Taffy-Our Child's Namesake
The other day I was in Wal Mart and our cashier was taking an interest in Taft, you know, because he's just so darn cute. The guy asked what his name was and I told him.
Wal Mart employee: "Taff? Like Taffy?
Me: Blank stare with internal dialogue saying, "Yep. Just like Taffy. We're thinking of naming our next baby Toots. Like Tootsie Roll."
Me: "No, like the president, William Howard Taft, with a T."
Wal Mart employee: Blank stare
Don't get me wrong here, I didn't even know there was a President Taft until after we even chose the name. If you were like me, embarrassingly uneducated about the Presidents of the United States, then here's some Billy Taft trivia for you:
1. He didn't like being president.
2. He later became a Supreme Court Justice (the only president to do so) and really liked that job.
3. He was so fat that he got stuck in the bathtub at the White House.
And another story...
We were having dinner at the hospital the other night (cuz it's free). A old couple was at the table next to us. I could tell the old lady was looking at Taft and I thought she was admiring him so I smiled at her and told Taft to say hi. Taft smiled at the lady but she didn't smile back. Instead:
Old Lady: "He needs his nose wiped"
Me: "Oh, thanks"I look at him and he has nothing on his face whatsoever. But I wipe anyway.
Old Lady: Leans over to her husband and does a whisper-yell (cuz she's old) "She didn't even get it"
Geez lady. Sorry I didn't get rid of the imaginary snot that is causing you to lose your appetite and therefore feel it necessary to tell a random stranger to wipe her son's nose.
People are weird.
