One Year Old (2 months late)

"Mom, this says that now that I'm one you aren't allowed to make me take these pictures with my monkey and a sign anymore. We're done."

None of these turned out that great, but as you can see this is a kid on the move. 

I took these pictures when Taft was actually one year old, but my camera cord is packed away. Luckily my MIL has the same one so you all are going to get blog post overload.

At one year (and a couple of months) Taft:
-Has 8 teeth almost 10
-Likes goldfish, animal crackers, pb&j, most all fruit, peas, green beans, broccoli, string cheese
-Still drink bottles before bed and nap (don't yell at me, I'm breaking him from it next month) but otherwise drinks from sippy cups
-Takes one nap and usually sleeps from 8 to 7.
-Loves his grandparents
-Seems to already be taking a special interest in the older women (teenagers on up)
-Loves dogs
-First word: "daahg"
-Loves toy cars and makes a killer motor sound
-Walks
-Still strongly dislikes getting dressed/undressed/diaper changed
-Likes to clean anything with a paper towel or toilet paper
-Pretends to wash his hair whenever he gets a hold of shampoo, lotion, or anything resembling a shampoo bottle
-Still loves Monkeyfriend
-Still uses a binky to sleep and sometimes calm down and sometimes just as a noise plug

Guten Tag

This is Taft getting in touch with his German ancestry. Both Bluth and Herway are German so we found it appropriate to dress our child as a German for a day or "Deutsch Kind fur einen Tag". 

We do have German ancestry but my mom actually dressed my younger brother in these lederhosen over 20 years ago and has saved them until now. One of my BFFs and former USU roommmate, Staci took Taft's one-year pictures last week and posted a sneak peak on her blog. I can't wait to see the others! 

Note: I made the shirt Taft is wearing. Booya. Although it looks like a girl shirt (per Seth) I was going for vintage boy shirt. It is too small and was not fun at all to put on or take off, but it served it's purpose of making the outfit seem authentic. 

Wouldn't you totally buy a bratwurst and sauerkraut from this kid?

A Little Easter

This was taken the week before Easter when we were at church. This cutie patootie in the dress is just a couple months older than Taft. Her name is Afton. Obviously, if they were a celebrity couple their name would be Tafton.

p.s. yes Taft's hands really are that huge and yes, his head is in the 90th percentile. But isn't he just the studliest one year old you've ever laid eyes on?

p.p.s. the camera cord is packed away in storage somewhere. it's really a shame because we have video of T-man walking a bit and getting a haircut by Dad that are a must see. Maybe come June I'll have them on here.

Sunday Best

This is Taft pre-church: seersucker suit, including jacket, tie, combed hair.

This is Taft post-church: suit jacket off, tie off, top button undone, messy hair, women's sunglasses.

(No Taft is not in a car seat and yes the car is moving. Don't report me to the authorities. The church is within walking distance, we were just too late to walk. I swear.)

The Boy

My sister told me to do a blog post because she was going through Bumski withdrawals. This one will disappoint her though because I don't have a new picture to post, but I'm still gonna talk about him. I may have mentioned this a few thousand times since Taft was born but he's not much of a cuddler. So when I tell you what's been happening these last couple of days you'll understand why they have been the BEST. DAYS. EVER.

Taft has started to get more stranger anxiety and I love it. Know why? Because he buries his face in my chest or neck and it's like he's cuddling with me on purpose. Yesterday we went to his 12 month check up at the doctor's. While we were in the waiting room Taft sneezed and a couple next to me laughed a little at his cutie pie sneeze. He got super embarrassed and layed on my shoulder for FIFTEEN MINUTES!! Other than when he was a super sleepy infant I think that was the longest his ever laid still. I was in heaven. The rest of the afternoon was awful because poor Bupski had to get traumatized by 4 new shots and having to be pinned down by Dad to get it done. It was really sad. BUT, later that night he was having trouble falling asleep so I rocked him and he sat STILL and I even sang (or hummed) to him and he fell right asleep. The fact that my singing didn't make him cry was a miracle in itself, but he never falls asleep being rocked anymore. THEN today I needed to shower and he needed to get clean too so I did double duty and he layed on my shoulder in the shower again for like ten minutes! I just stayed there holding him until the water got too cold. THEN..tonight we did the same routine rocking/singing and he fell asleep again.

As I was rocking him tonight that book "Love You Forever" popped into my head and I got a little teary. I was just remembering how just a really short year ago I was rocking a teeny baby and tonight I was rocking a monster sized almost toddler.

Seth and I can't get enough of this kid. Every night as we're going to bed one of us seems to always say "Don't you just love the boy?" We do, we just love him!

"Hey Guys, I Won Another Award"

Funny huh? Seth and I spent a good while laughing at Taft with these glasses on. I witnessed one of Seth's proudest medical school moments last week. He received an "award" for "Best Comic Relief" in his medical school class. It was quite a moment. He got these glasses and the funny nose/mustache/glasses thing along with passes to the movies. I've always thought Seth was/is very funny, but sometimes we have discussions on the appropriateness of his humor. Seth can be obviously funny, but he also has a dry/awkward humor side that seems to come out most around people who don't know him at all or have no sense of humor. Seth loves it. I get embarrassed. Seth also likes to ruffle feathers. Just a couple of weeks ago he sent out a controversial/joking e-mail to his class that about 90% understood it was a joke and 10% did not. He received a few hate e-mails back and loved it. I don't know why he likes that, but he just does.

Regardless, I'm glad I married someone who makes me laugh each day and I'm glad others can appreciate his humor too.

And I'm glad we have a funny little boy who looks extra funny in these disguises. 

Mizatch Day

We were so unbelievably anxious and excited for today. Taft was so excited he peed his pants. Literally. I was holding him before Seth opened his letter and all of the sudden felt my stomach area get very warm. Somehow Taft's diaper did not do it's purpose and both he and I were very wet. That's just a side note, because the big news is we FINALLY know where we'll be living for the next four years. For the first year (transitional year) we'll be in Spokane, WA and then for the next three years (anesthesiology) we'll be in sunny San Diego, CA. We are VERY happy about our next four years!!

Tonight Seth's class had a dinner party at The Point. We had a great time. Thanks everyone who let me borrow a dress and offered to let me borrow a dress. I ended up wearing one of my friend Jessie's dresses. The event was described as semi-formal, but it turned out to have a big mix of styles from jeans to formal dresses. I stressed for nothing, but it was fun wearing such a cute dress! Thanks Jess. AND Nicole for the shoes! :) 

P.S. Taylor is over at my place and she just said, "Tell your friends I said hi". So "Hi" from Taylor.

Taft's REAL Birthday

Taft is officially ONE year old today. He started the day off with a yummy change of pace from his regular daily bowl of oatmeal,  and had French Toast. Then he played with friends at the Kids Club where they sang Happy Birthday to him while Mom exercised. Then Bumski and Mom went to Baby Book Time at the library and picked out some new books to take home. After the library, Mom and Bupski went to the park to play and have lunch. They had a great time but Bupski got tired and took a short nap before heading home for a real nap. When he woke up Dad came home and he got to go on a ride in the running stroller. Then everybody headed out for pizza where they met up with Grandad, Nana, Lanx, Tates, and Cousin Amy. It was back to Bupski's house for presents and cake. Bupski got lots of great gifts but maybe the best of all was a newer, cleaner, bigger version of Monkeyfriend. Bupski thanks everyone for the birthday wishes and gifts. He has learned to give kisses so consider yourself virtual kissed by the Bupski.

Taft's Birthday Party

We had Taft's birthday party this weekend and boy was it fun. We had a "ball" theme. Since most of the invitees (other than family) were under two years of age, everyone was asked to bring a ball to play with. I figured that could keep the kids occupied while parents and other grownups ate and socialized. I might add that only 2 of the 10 kids under 2 that were invited actually came (a whole other post on the concept of RSVP to come later) but I think we still had a blast. At least Seth, Taft, and I did.  We had food resembling ball shapes or circle shapes like sandwiches on rolls, carrots, cucumbers, and tomatoes cut into circles, cupcakes with a gumball on top, and lollipop party favors. I really had fun planning it all. We had it at our church since our place is pretty small, and the party ended with a Herway vs. Bluth basketball tourney in the cultural hall. A special shout-out to the Dan/Lara Herway clan who made up half the party with their big and darling family. Seriously, it's too bad for ya'll that their blog is private because their kids are CUU-UUTE.

Taft's actual birthday is on Tuesday so we will celebrate again then! Enjoy some pictures of our fun day.

"You REALLY needed a haircut"

Ever since Taft was born it seems a few things have been on the back burner, namely Self-Grooming. Until yesterday, I hadn't had a haircut since like April or May, just after Taft was born. It was getting ridiculous:

Exhibit A:

I decided to go to a cosmetology school to save on cash. The girl was slightly obnoxious (no offense girl) and confirmed that I did indeed need a haircut by saying: "Your hair will feel SO much better once it's cut, I mean, like you REALLY needed a haircut."  Thanks chica. And for the record hair cutting people, when you ask "What kind of shampoo do you use?" try not to use such an accusatory tone and you really don't need to follow up with "Oh REALLY? Did you know that stuff is like way bad for your hair?" Yeah lady, I didn't really figure the shampoo that is $1.50, sometimes $0.88 on sale, was the best stuff out there. I just have better things to spend my money on that $20 shampoo bottles. Lets be honest, I don't even HAVE $20. Doesn't the fact that I've waited a YEAR for a haircut, and am now at the hair SCHOOL, indicate that high end shampoo isn't on my priority list? Just sayin'.

Well, I have a new haircut now and it's not the worst thing ever, but it does feel a little 1999 Rachel Green from Friends. Today I even painted my finger nails a lovely "sheer blush" shade and then did my toenails a "Satin Shoes". I honestly think the last time I painted my toes was the fews days before Taft was born. I wanted to have pretty toes to look at while in labor I guess.

Now that I've taken care of myself a little these past two days I feel pretty good. In fact, in the words of the great Shania Twain, "Man! I feel like a woman, hey, hey".

For the record, I don't think it's really THAT important to have painted nails, just that it feels nice, ya know?

Little Black Dress

This is a random request, but I need to borrow a semi-formal/formal dress from someone. Seth has a formal dinner coming up for school and I don't have anything appropriate and I'd rather not buy something because I won't have many occasions to wear again I'm guessing. Does anyone have something I can borrow? Like maybe from a formal night on a cruise you went on?

It's hard to find a modest "Little Black Dress" but I think this one is so pretty. And sorry it's so huge, I don't know how to change it.

(p.s. I tried your dress on Nicole and I'm so sad that I look like an oompa loopa in it. Thanks for letting me borrow it though)
